I also really like what you have done in your back yard! I'm terrible with directions, so I'm not sure if they would block too much light or not! If the sun comes from that side of your yard from noon on, then I think that they would block too much sun for full sun plants. The other thing is that I believe columnar aspens get around 7 feet wide, so you might want to plant them 6 or 7 feet apart so they would just be touching each other when full grown. You look like you take really good care of your plants, so I would expect columnar aspens for you to be on the wider side of the range - since you would be providing them with all the nutrients and water that they need. In the two years since I have planted my columnar aspens they have grown about 6 feet in height (they started out just under 6 feet high) and they have also filled out in width quite a bit as well. I think it would also look nice if you put in 5, or another odd number, in a row along the fence to give you some privacy, but not a solid wall of trees. If you do put in a line of trees, I think it looks nice when people plant low growing plants under them, like hostas or something to draw the eye back down toward ground level, anything for an excuse for a new flower bed!

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to say that my parents had Swedish Aspen (columnar) and they only got to around 3 to 3 1/2 feet wide. Maybe we're talking about different trees here.
They did space them about six feet apart so there was alot of room between.

I planted 5 Swedish Aspen whips along my new chainlink fence last year to hopefully be a screen to my neighbors ugly shed:) according to Lois Holes trees & shrub book, to create a screen, they should be planted 4 feet apart.
(mature height is 30-45 ft and 5-8 ft wide)
If I hadn't spent so much moving spruce trees into my yard from the farm last year, I would of bought bigger aspens....but I was pleasantly surprised how quickly the whips grew all summer, and now that they are settled in, I expect they will really take off this year.
