I've got a nice clump blooming beside my front door. I think I'll be getting more as they bloom nice and early. I've had squirrels in my frontyard and so far I haven't noticed any bulbs missing from them. One side of a bed still hasn't come up but I think that is more to do with the fact that it doesn't get as much sun. Now you have me worried...

I have never had the red squirrels here dig up any of my bulbs.
They have stashed sunflower seeds, from the neighbourÂs birdfeeder, in my compost.
They also carried discarded apples into the trees. That was amusing with apples in pine trees.

The gray squirrels they have back east seem to cause all kinds of trouble especially when theyÂre crowded together in the cities.

Thanks for the reassurance Ian. I have a balsam tree right outside our livingroom windows that the squirrels like to climb. This is also over the area that the bulbs haven't started coming up, (which got me thinking). It seems to me from talking to other gardeners in town what people have more of a problem with is mice eating plants in the winter. One friend sprinkles moth balls throughout his mulch which seems to work.

Thanks for posting this thread. My grandparents sold their farm last spring and my mother brought me some of these blooming bulbs. I didn't know what these little blue bulbs were. What a pretty name for such a pretty flower. These bulbs have to be pretty drought tolerant. I remember them on the south side of my grandparent house and they haven't lived on their farm for 20 years. Mine aren't blooming yet, but I have lots of buds.

Well, I must appologize to the squirrels... I now have loads and loads of these little pretties coming up. Whooo-hooo! I should just learn to be more patient before I go blaming someone (something), hey???? LOL
