My first thought is Clematis. It will produce less flowers in part shade, but should be okay - I have one on the front of my north porch that is full of buds right now.... You'll need to trellis it - I don't think they climb without trellising (like they won't attach to brick or porch facades).

There are some lovely new clematis. I agree with on greenthumb, Clematis is great for your zone. The Patio Clematis I've linked to below might be perfect for you.

I would think you would want something with a long season of interest. What about a shrub that you can coppice to keep within bounds like a cotinus coggyria (smoke bush) or sambucus (the golden and black elderberries are both nice).

These options would give you beautiful foliage, blooms and some fall color.

Another option might be a rosa glauca for it's beautiful blue, red-veined foliage or a rosa rugosa. Both will have lovely hips and should give a reasonable amount of blooms in part sun.

I love the idea of a clematis. I also REALLY like the idea of an ornamental grass. I may look into the grass first but it can be REALLY hard to find something hardy to our climate. I have some in next to my pond and remember them being difficult to find. They don't grow as tall as I would like for this particular spot. I will do some more research. Clematis is a good option and can be my back up plan.
