Eeak! Stop me before I do something I'll regret!

I am thinking of biting the bullet and planting English Ivy in the grass strip between the curb and road. Everything I read always talks about how invasive it is, but I wonder if it may not be so invasive in zone 4. Does anyone in zone 4 have it growing AND in control in an area bound by concrete? Also does it really stay evergreen? -Daina.

Daina, I'm not sure that any of us on the Far North forum can grow English Ivy, as it is Zones 4-8. I have never seen it around here anyway. But I found some websites specific to its invasiveness and control, and it doesn't seem to be a really big problem in the Midwest. There's a map at the link below. Sorry not to be of more help.

If the location is shady you might consider Lily of the Valley.
Lily of the Valley is aggressive but bounded by concrete should stay confined.
Put in some edging to discourage growing under the concrete.

I grew English Ivy when I lived on the coast and it tried to grow over walkways and up walls.
There (zone 7) it constantly needed trimming.
