A rotton fig is usually a sour or fermented fig to me.. A reg fig is basically sweet, with a jam texture crunchy little seeds. but they vary sooo much. Hope that helps!

Rotten fig = sour.
Good fig = sweet.

Gotcha.

But how would you describe it, would it be similar to another fruit or a cross of different fruits. Thought occurred, do they taste anything like the fruit in Fig Newtons? I've ate those before, though it's been a while.

I must say i never bit into a rotten fig as they tend to dry on tree if not picked late in season if its still warm out and sunny days. Mine have just bascially lost taste in the fig itself as our season can end rather quickly though.
To me and maybe not others a fig newton does a fresh fig injustice and taste nothing like it as a fresh fig depending on the type grown can have a beery taste, a fruity taste like melons, a sweet taste like honey overtones, hope that makes some sense. One thing i can tell you was i made an awful face i imagine when i bit into a fig several years back with ants that had found dinner inside of it!

Karen,

As Martin indicated, depending on the cultivar, the flavor of the fruit can be very different. Another important influencing factor concerning taste is the environmental (temp, sun, soil, etc) factors have on each cultivar. Since you live in Ohio the list of recommended varieties narrows considerably if eating the fruit is your goal. For example while Panachee is considered an excellent fig in California, conventional wisdom is it doesn't do well in the North East.

I recommend that you go to the figs4fun.com varieties information portion which contains fig flavor information for many figs.

Good Luck!
Vinnie
