New Cutting

Hi,

I am new to this forum and am from australia on the south coast of nsw and I'm a bit lost on what to do with my fig cutting. I propagated my fig cutting in mid summer and i'm pretty sure its just a common fig. It is doing really well and has one big leaf with more coming through. We are now getting into autumn here and its getting much cooler a minimum of 7oC and max of 17oC so I am wondering should I bring it inside? Plant it? or chance it?

Any advice is most welcome thanks!

Can you post a picture of it? What growing zone are you in? Depending on size and temperature extremes, you may be able to plant it. Good luck!

Summer cuttings should not be exposed to frosty temperatures their first fall. Bring it inside to a sunny window soon, before it gets much colder, then let it get cold and go dormant at the end of winter. That way the roots will have time to grow stronger, and the tree will have to spend less time in dormancy and wake up with more energy.

hoosierbanana: Thankyou that is most helpful as I love my figs and don't want this one to fail as I started with three and the dog destroyed one, the leaf fell off the other and I think isn't going to make it so I have one left third times the charm :)

SpringLakeNJ: I would say a we're a 'tentative' zone 11 but australian weather is quite temperamental especially this year with unseasonably warm and cold days, at the moment its cooler than a normal start to Autumn. Can't find the camera atm but will post a pic as soon as I can. Thanks!

This seems a waste of time now as the dog has destroyed the cutting :'( Thanks to everyone for their kind information.

Millie,

Sorry to hear about the dog vs. cutting. Did it dig the cutting out completely and dry out? If not, and the roots are still intact, it may still make it. Judging from the size of the plant, you should bring something that small and green indoors and try to grow it out over the winter. Good luck!

Once established, it is near to impossible to kill a fig tree. But when young and just starting out, too much water, not enough water, potting it in full sun, and extreme temps can kill it in its youth. Best luck!

We have found the cutting virtually undamaged but with roots exposed so we repotted it and are hoping for the best, our dog did this at night and we found it a couple hours later so theres a good chance for it now :) wish me luck!

Thanks for that igo4fish, I wasn't sure being that size if it would be good outdoors overnight, I think during the day it should be fine though as temps during winter during the day are around 17oC.
