Funny-looking Swedish Aspen

I've recently planted five Columnar Aspen along my back fence to create a privacy screen. They were just starting to leaf out when they were delivered (by a reputable gardening centre) nearly two weeks ago. Three of the trees look OK, but two of them seem to be having some sort of problem. They have leaves on the top and leaves on the bottom, and then these weird bare trunk areas devoid of leaves or branches. Kind of like poodles. They're about 10 to 12 feet tall. Are they going to grow out? Is this normal? I'm getting darn tired of watching the neighbours out smoking on their deck.

They obviously shouldn't have the bare areas, but if you leave them as they are, those bare areas should fill in in year or two. They really are remarkably fast growing -- I put four in a few years ago and while they didn't grow much the first year because they were getting settled in, the next year they grew more than two metres!

So I guess you have to decide whether you want to wait a couple years for them to fill in, or call up the garden centre and say you want them to replace the two that have bad shape.

Thanks for the reply, Don. I think I'll call the garden centre tomorrow and ask their opinion, but I guess I don't mind waiting for them to fill out. Sounds like they do grow quickly.
