fig pest or disease?

A 3/8" diameter blob of substance has appeared on my young fig tree. It looks like molasses but is not as viscous. I wiped it off and found the bark underneath has rotted and the inner stem has started to rot as well. I can't find it listed in any of my books.

The tree was been in a cold room for the winter and has started to leaf out beautifully. I'm worried that I'll lose it. Can anyone advise what has caused the substance to appear and how I can control or eliminate it?
