With fig trees patience is a virtue. Unless your tree is planted in a soggy area I would leave it alone. Just because the tree isn't pushing growth to date, doesn't mean it is dying. Like you I live in the NE and I have approximately 20 fig trees that still look dormant.

Not sure how you have determine the plant seems to be dying if it hasn't pushed any berba or leaves but if the wood didn't make it the roots probably have life left in them.

One lesson I did learn is not to give up too easily on a fig. Last year I acquired a Gene's Sal that didn't push up growth until late July.

Lastly you indicated in your post that your yard is not ideally suited for a fig tree since it is heavily shaded. My guess is that you know that fig trees require full sun especially in the NE.

Dear Melbil, Your fig tree requires atleast four hours direct sunlight. Transplant it to a sight where it gets the direct sunlight. Put lots of organic soil and water moderately. I am sure it will regenerate itself. Wish you all the best.
