I am sure there are some sprouting but it is the weekend and I am off and it is TOO COLD AND RAINY for me to go out and check...this is becoming a too depressing trend.

Sharon, I believe it was you that said your Aquilegia were late sprouting? Are they still coming up? None of mine have started germinating yet and I'm starting to get worried. I have about 10 containers of different ones and so far there isn't anything in any of them.

Wow, Marcia, LAST YEARS containers?! Cool! Maybe I'll just leave my perennials that didn't sprout this spring (yet) and see what happens with them. There are two of them that I just realized are weeds--- now that the true leaves are showing up! Oh well, guess I have some well-tended weeds, LOL.

Syreeta, yes Columbines are usually late sprouters, they are also lagers, be patient, don't dump them yet ;)

Are these the seeds (Persicaria polymorpha) that I sent you Marcia, that would be so cool if they are indeed seedlings!

Congrats on all the new sprouts, especially the ones from last year Marcia, lol. That's pretty cool. The only new one I have to report is Dwarf Columbine. It's been cold and rainy here too, so maybe the rest of them will sprout with the warmer weather that's (hopefully!) coming.

Yesterday I found sprouts of:

Lily, Asiatic 'Connecticut King' x 'Fire Mountain'
Sunflower, dwarf 'Yellow Spray'
Lilac, purple (I think.. just 1 sprout in the container)
Coreopsis rosea 'American Dream' (I think.. only a couple teeny tiny sprouts)

Yesterday I planted out a couple of winter sown sprouts that I have quite a few of and saved some to plant out a little bit later just in case we still get a frosty night. I planted out:

Poppy 'The Giant' (Papaver somniferum)
Dragon's Head (Dracocephalum moldavicum)

And while I was weeding, I noticed two Persicaria polymorpha seedlings around the mother plant, never had that happen before, so therefore I carefully dug them up and transplanted them to another part of the garden. Hope they take ;)

Oh my gosh it was a fantastic day today - it got up to 28 degrees! The hot weather made some interesting stuff pop up today:

I am also happy to report that my winter sown Persicaria polymorpha from last year is pushing up like 'crazy'. Thanks to that crazy_gardener for the seeds and for another kooky looking plant from last year - Phlomis tuberosa which is already over a foot tall. I love those krinkly leaves and sure hope to see it bloom this year.

Susan, my catalpa sprouted on May 10th. Tiny little thing, isn't it?

That larch sprout is tiny. I wonder how long before it looks like a tree instead of some sort of little alien spider?

I actually wondered about my catalpa sprouts. It looks like I'm growing clover.
Pretty sure though that I couldn't be lucky enough to have all four leaf clovers...

Well in the past few days I have sprouts of:
Nasties
Nepeta
Evening Scented Stocks OR Lobelia....not sure which...I planted directly into my patio boxes and 2 have stocks and 2 have lobelia and of course i thought I would remember which was which!
I also have a couple of others but I have to take the plastic off to see what they are, and its still too cold overnight here to leave them open so I'll wait because once I open them they stay open!

I definately have a sprout in the Impatiens container!

Only three new sprouts to report from the last couple of days:

I was a bit disappointed because it has been so 'hot' here this week that I expected to see sprouts galore when I did my rounds. I have 121 out of 193 containers sprouted so I still am looking for more. Looking for roses, columbines, daylilies, hosta, iris, clematis, ligularia, cimicifuga, peony, variety of trees/shrubs, etc. Some I know from last year are slow ones and some are experiments so time will tell.

I'm finally seeing some sprouts happening in my container of pulsatilla 'Heiler Hybrids'. The ones I started indoors germinated immediately, but I only got 4 seedlings, so it would be nice to have more germinate.
Also the WS'd sempervivums are doing great. I had zero germination indoors with those.

I've given up on some WS annuals. I figure they should have germinated by now, so i'm dumping those containers. That'll teach 'em!

Susan that larch sprout is totally cute - it looks like a little octopus! Hard to believe a whole tree starts out that small.

I just finished reaming out DH for lighting the firepit with all my WS containers clustered around it(!!!!!!) The plastic containers were all melted and caved in. He was super sorry and felt really bad, he didn't even know what they were. So we went outside so I could show him and make him feel worse, and strangely most of the seedlings inside were ok. Hmmm. And the Yucca filamentosa I was waiting for has finally sprouted. Huh. Perhaps it is one of those that requires being burnt to germinate? LOL. So DH is off the hook and I have everything sprouted now except that clematis.

Not really WS, but I am still amazed. I bought some seeds from Garden North for a ornamental crab called malus baccata 'streak' which apparently has variegated foliage.

I planted the seed in moist medium and placed in the fridge downstairs for two months. The fridge was set too cold, the soil froze. I removed from the fridge on Tuesday night, there was ice on top of the soil. Yesterday, to my amazement, I look and I see the seeds sprouting. Talk about eager. Now if I can get my hardy glad seed to germinate I'll be happy.

There seems to be something happening with my little Larch sprout. It has gotten a bit taller but now all the little spider legs are pointing upward instead of outward - it looks like a little umbrella that got turned inside out by the wind. Hopefully it is not expiring and upward is it's growth habit...

Glen - looks like you replicated winter sowing indoors and a variegated crab sounds beautiful. I've added to my wish list.

I finally see some sprouts in my columbine container.

I thought my wintersowing had been an utter, total failure, and since it looked like NOTHING was coming up, decided I must have made some sort of terrible error. But gradually, over the last two weeks, the containers are starting to sprout; arugula, various herbs, columbine, maltese cross, etc. The two containers that still show no sign of life whatsoever, though, are two clematis. Should I continue to be patient?

Fadoodle, that's good to hear that your WS decided to come up :0). The only thing that didn't sprout for me was clematis too - apparently depending what kind it is, clematis may take months or even a year or two to sprout. I just shoved mine behind some stuff and if it comes up it comes up.

Columbine was really really slow to germinate for me too (and it was even started indoors). But once it started I got lots of sprouts.

How's everyone doing on their transplantings? I have probably 20 more yet to plant and I'm done! Apart from the non-sprouters, those will get dumped at the end of the month in the back of the garden just incase they germinate later in the season or next spring.

I've been mostly doing annuals, but some of the perennials need to get into the ground PDQ. No time, no time!

ThatÂs what I do Marcia, I prioritize. Annuals is my first concern, perennials can wait, most of them are not going to bloom anyways till next year, so those go in last. Last year I was planting my WSÂd perennials right up till August. ;)

Right now part of my priority is getting WS containers cleaned up and put away. Of course you'd never know it looking at my patio! What a mess! :)

Transplanting?? Bah humbug... I'm trying not to be too much of a whiner but just let me say that 'life' is interfering with gardening in a big way around here lately. Also, I have the next 2 days off with big plans to get my winter sown treasures into their new homes. As luck would have it - it is raining tonight and rain is in the forecast from now through the weekend.

Gee, Susan, I think we are kindred spirits. I'm so glad to see someone else who doesn't have their planting done (or hardly even started) yet. I'm so far behind because, just like you, life is getting in the way big time. And now . . . it's raining again. Maybe it's a good day to do a few more pots. I can always use a few more of those.
