Canna Lilies seem to take on a life of their own. I have grown them in all sorts of soil and they always grow well, without fertilizing, even in pots. They do best in full sun and they need space - about one foot on either side. They produce lots of tubers which you can dig and store in your basement for next year. Very carefree plant.

They like full sun, heat, and a lot of water (but not standing water). I try to start mine in April for mid summer blooms. If you forget they will probably bloom September. The basic red ones are a little easier and multiply faster than the fancy cultivars. I used to put them in the ground but now I grow them in big pots on the patio.

This year I will be planting mine in whiskey barrels. THey like lots of sun, weekly fertilizer and water, water and a little bit more water.

I overwintered one red canna in a big pot inside,, I think half of it died, because I didn't keep it moist enough through the winter, but it is growing (green leaves )and I am going to pull it up and add some new soil this weekend along with some compost and it would ever warm up enough, maybe start to give it some time outside during the afternoon...
