wanted: wanted winter blooming plants

I am looking for winter blooming seedlings for Zone 8b. This is the first year in our home and I want it to be prettier than it is this year. Nothing is blooming. All we see is sand and leaves. The plants we planted in the Summer grew, bloomed but have all faded.

I am new to gardening so I would welcome advice and or suggestions. Half of our front yard is full sun and the other half full shade.
