Bleeding Heart dead? Why?

Hi,

A few years ago I planted an old-fashioned bleeding heart. Every spring is came up bigger and more beautiful. And this year -- nothing -- no sign of life. At first I thought the ground hadn't warmed up in the shade yet. But the ferns are up, the hostas are poking up their heads, the astilbe and goatsbeard are getting big. I think it's dead. I'm so disappointed. Why would a healthy, hardy plant just flat-out die?

Any thoughts?
