We have a variegated ficus in our side yard, under a large tree. The big tree provides shade pretty much all day but it should get plenty of indirect sun. Its tallest spot is about 10ft, though it is not thick at the base. (It has four trunks coming up... does that mean it is 4 separate plants?)

This was planted before we moved in and it was never "full" of leaves. But in the last year or so, leaves are dropping and branches are drying out. Now, the leaves are very sparse and it just looks sad and half dead. It was set on an automatic sprinkling system. But I will be working on that to make sure it really is getting enough water. I have fertilized it using 3:1:2.

Is there anything else I can do to rejuvenate the plant? Should I cut it back? and if so.. how far? Is there a point where a plant is just beyond restoration?
