My guess would be that there are many figs from Afghanistan, and if it is not fruiting, then it will be hard to identify. The only identifiers are leaves and fruit.

I would definitely take and root some cuttings before moving it. If moving it is not an immediate need, then you would have time to know that the cuttings had rooted, before you do the moving.

I have just received a small plant of afghan fig (ficus afghanistanica)about 15" tall.
I ordered it from forest farm web site, Grants Pass Oregon.
They said it may grow to be as tall as 90 feet and it is untested. They said it was hardy to zone 7.
It is said to produce many, many small sweet figs.
I have it planted in a one gallon pot now.
Plan to plant it in the ground when it grows larger.
I am on Guemes Island in the San Juans. I have Desert King fig tree growing here.

If your tree has small leaves, relative to the other fig tree, and it is 'frilly', then you probably have the Ficus afghanistanica mentioned in the above post. I also find that this tree has smaller diameter limbs than Ficus carica for the same length, and the wood is hard, not pithy. If this is the case I would suggest you try air layering in addition to cuttings. I have air-layered mine several times, and find them difficult to get to root.
As for fruiting, if they do indeed get to be as large as suggested then it probably takes many years for them to reach fruiting maturity, so don't be in any hurry.....Elder (Lou)
