Am I right in thinking you are going to grow this in a pot.

Pots are not good things to grow perennial plants in if you are going to leave them in it all winter. A planter will freeze and thaw all winter and that is death to plants. Why don't you try growing annual vines like Morning Glories or Sweet Peas or yellow nasturtium vine or even Scarlet runner beans. All of these will reach a height of 6 to 8 feet in one season.

If It's in a planter you need a deep large planter to allow for the root system and you will have room for some smaller shallow rooted annuals like wave petunias.

You could grow either woodbine or hops in containers and keep them sheared to the height/length you want. Hops will grow back from the ground each year, as winter comes and the plants die back just bury your container where it sits up to it brim and through a foot or so of leaves over the top and it will winter over just fine.

Some of the hardy clematis grow well, but not in pots.
