It looks like an Equisetum spp. to me. There are quite a few varieties. Is the common name Scouring Rush? I think we used to call it Goose Grass when we were kids and used them for straws :^) Interesting to know its edible.

Maybe someone closer to you would know the variety.

I think they're either swamp horsetails (E. fluviatile) or woodland horsetails (E. sylvaticum)... closely related to the Scouring Rush (E. hyemale) which is bright green and has joints that come apart with a squeak. Toots, we used to play with them as kids too :0) We called them Indian Pipes (which I think is actually something else, oh well)

Your picture is much clearer and the plant in a more advanced stage, but for comparison here's a pic I took while on my wildflower tour last weekend. This one is horsetail. They look the same to me. Sorry for the poor quality pic.

I was reading a little on this plant, this is the fertile plant, later, the other green plant and branched out appears, [sterile]... which I'm more familiar of.

Here's your Indian Pipe, Gil! What a neat plant. AKA Corpse Plant :^( Parasitic, too. Have only seen it in pics, never in the wild. It is in my Northern BC plant book though, listed in the heath family.
