Growing Figs in Northern Virginia

Last spring I received a fig tree of an unspecified variety as a gift and planted it in my backyard. It was loaded with dark purple figs in the fall, but none were ready to harvest before the frost got them. The winter killed the tree down to the roots and it has not started growing new shoots. Question, will it do well this year or is this a variety that will not grow in Zone 7.

Just curious, did you winterize (give it sufficient insulation) your fig tree during the winter?

No, I did nothing. I have another variety that I also did not insulate and it has re-leafed with no die-back.

A lot of figs if you cover them during their first couple winters in northern VA, will then do fine. Could have been a borderline variety. The larger the tree gets, the more winter hardy it can become.
