It has giant taproots, I mean they will go down over 2 feet the size of a baseball bat. You can't really kill rhubarb but you will probably break its roots because it's so hard to dig. It transplants fairly well even with broken roots and you will end up with a new patch and an old patch that's hard to get rid of. Where I have "removed" rhubarb in the past it has returned and been removed again for several years.

It grows in the same spot for centuries. You can tell where old homesteads were because there's a rhubarb patch.

Well that's kind of interesting about being able to identify old homesteads by finding a rhubarb patch.

Of course now I've got to prepare a new spot.

Rhubarb is hard to kill. Dh piled lumber on my rhubarb for years and i thought it was gone. He moved the lumber pile a few years ago, and there was the rhubarb! LOL

Holy cow, you guys aren't kidding !

DH informed me last week that the rhubarb we have isn't nearly as good as the stuff he used to have as a kid, so I decided to dig it all up and pitch it instead. It was growing it's heart out in a bad spot, anyway.

I dug half way to China so far, broke the handle of my shovel (old well used shovel) and there's still some rhubarb bits down there in the hole.

If I dig a bit further until I can only find little bits, cover it with a concrete sidewalk block, it's gotta give up, right?

No, it will come up around the edges and then it will come find you. Probably just in time for Halloween. mwahahaha.
