Well, I'm trying to get my veggies planted. Slowly but surely they'll get put in!

Last year I planted rutabagas. 'Joan', I think they were called. This year I have 'Helenor Organic'. They got little black worm like bugs in the roots as soon as they started developing. They burrowed tunnels through out the root. By the end of the season, most were done for but I managed to salvage a few. Very disapointing, because everyone around here told me they'd given up on turnips etc. because they got too wormy. I thought I'd be good for a year or so as it's a brand new garden on fresh broke land. Not so, I guess.

Where do they come from??? I did add well composted cattle manure that spring, but this year I'll be planting them where the manure was added last year and not this spring, so not as fresh. Maybe that's where they come from?

And does anyone have any idea on how to control them? I LOVE TURNIPS!

I did sprinkle Rotanone on the foilage, but that was after they were wormy and it didn't have any noticable affect. The worms/bugs are only about 3-4 mm. long and black. I researched a bit and never did find anything that resembled this pest.

Any ideas are most welcome :^)
