would pruning help?

I have a rose that is showing a bit of green on the stalk just above ground, but no leaves yet. I was told that hard pruning would allow the plant to concentrate its energy and would grow better.

I have Champlain, T. Bugnet, John Cabot, Grootendorst, Madame Hardy, William Lobb, and Frontenac that are doing fine.

Any advice?

Yes, for sure by cutting off old and dead canes, this will help to rejuvenate and promote new growth.

I would cut off the dead canes. Some roses are slower to wake up, which might explain why this rose is not leafed out yet. Did you try digging around the base to see if it is sprouting from the bottom? If the stem is green then it should be alive yet. Which rose is it?

It is a Constance Spry. I have dug it up, there is no sprouting from the base. Below ground level the stem was quite green. I have potted it in a small pot and brought it into the house.
Tonight I have pruned all my roses.
