you're going to want as much sun as you can manage. Also, if possible plant your tree on the south side of a building or other structure (wall, fence) as such areas tend to experience winter less severely.

Azaleas prefer acidic soil, figs prefer near neutral or slightly basic (depending upon who you ask).

Figs will tend to grow like shrubs in colder areas (resprouting if winter kills back top growth in a shrubby fashion)

Many of us grow figs in containers, these will need to be moved for protection in winter. In-ground figs will need wrapping or other protection in winter as well (in our zones).
