C.J., LSU Purple is an outstanding fig - for a very hot climate. It isn't even edible in New England. As soon as my figs start to ripen the birds go for them. There were a couple of pecks on the LSU Purples, then the birds wouldn't even touch them, LOL. I sent mine to relatives in southern Florida.
One factor that you have to consider if you want figs in the ground is season length. In-ground figs start later than potted figs because it takes the soil longer to heat up in the spring. The area you choose needs to be a heat trap otherwise you'll get figs, but they won't have time to ripen properly. I tried Celeste in-ground here without heat trapping techniques, and didn't get a ripe fig from it - and that was my earliest main crop fig. Are container figs out of the question?

Currently, all of my figs are in pots. Eventually, the issues will be how many (more) pots I can fit in the basement.

Thanks for the heads up on the LSU Purple. I'm going to try putting the LSU in my small greenhouse next year. My peppers, ginger and lemon grass have all responded well to the extra warmth. If the weather doesn't warm up FAST, I may have to move EVERYTHING in there. This has been the coldest, wettest June that I can remember. We've had so much rain the my plants are growing gills!

C.J. you're welcome. I think fignut makes an excellent point about heat trapping. Vasile S, aka Herman, talks about "heat units" and selecting varieties that require fewer heat units in the colder climates or areas with a shorter growing season.

A variety that seems to be a winner is Marseilles VS's. I have a one year old plant that is in a pot. It is a very bushy plant that is 3 feet tall with over 20 figs. That plant is named in honor of Vasile. I haven't had the pleasure of tasting the fruit from this plant but based on the reviews others have provided I can't wait:)

Please find another link below that talks to cold weather figs, which ones should be potted and which ones should be planted. Trust me follow Vasile's advice he knows what he is talking about.
