Aren't those damselflies? I thought dragonflies were bigger? Regardless that's really neat!

We have lots this year too. I think it's BECAUSE there are lots of mosquitoes. These guys just don't eat fast enough, though. There are too many mosquitoes left!

I have the same thing happening here in coastal Virginia. I've never, in the 25 yrs I've lived here, seen so many!!!

BTW, that is a damselfly as it has it's wings closed while resting and dragonflies have them open. To me, it doesn't matter as they are all dragonflies while conversing anyway!

I've seen alot here as well. I read in the local paper that the main reason is that last summer was wet and provided ideal breeding conditions for them. If that's the case, I'd expect the high numbers to continue, as there certainly has been enough water and mosquitoes this year as well.

The city has deliberately released dragonflies in parks, trying for a more natural means of mosquito control. Every bit helps I guess. This morning I saw a frog hiding beside my pond, hopefully he'll eat a few mosquitos too. Actually I am still puzzled how a frog found my yard, it's not like I'm near a lake or river, or even a forest.

I was surprised to find a large (for around here) frog in my yard last week. I moved him over near my pond, but haven't seen him since.
We also have lots of dragonflies, and last summer was our driest ever.

We haven't had much rain over the last 2 months. The good news is that the mosquitos are gone (at least in my backyard). The bad news is that the damselflies are almost gone as well. So goes the circle of life....

mytime... several other people have told me that they have found frogs in the their yards this summer.

I've seen my share of dragonflies here too but they never land long enough to snap a picture of them. Must mean they are busy working on the skeeter-control-front!

Funny about the frogs! I remember being a kid growing up in Southern Ontario and we lived out "in the country". Up the road from our house was a mini little creek which my friends and I would go to all the time. We caught minnows (at least WE thought they were all minnows!) and brought them to my parents pond all the time. Hmmmmm.... maybe that's how my folks ended up with a bull frog???? Maybe???

We do have a lot of dragonflies this year. My puppy is having a grand time chasing them around the yard!

One of my cats has been practicing catching birds and bats by catching the big, huge dragonflies. I have had a couple of gifts at the door. It's so sad. We sure do have a lot of them, large and small, this year. And the grasshoppers are starting to be pretty abundant. Now, those, I could do without. She could catch as many of those as she wants.

Its funny we were just talking abt this same thing in another group that I belong too. Our mosquito's seemed to have vanished as well :0) now is the grasshoppers would go away, yuck!

This year it was excessive mayflies...(mayfly mush)and sawfly larvae. The mayflies are harmless but gross and are now gone... The sawfly larvae destroyed tons of stuff in my yard but focused on the roses..

Now all my pests are gone :-)
Just annoying crows... seems to be more and more crows every year here...
