Usually this is normal for Squash plants....You know that Squash have male and female blossoms on the same plant (monoecious). The blossoms of both sexes are open and fertile only during the morning hours of one day, so maybe your not in your garden at that exact time to see the blooms actually open.

During this time pollen must be transferred by bees, the female blossom will close without being fertilized, the squash will not enlarge and in a few days it will drop from the plant to the ground. The male blossom may open a second day, but the pollen will no longer be fertile and the blossom will close, wilt and drop from the plant that day or the next. There are many more male blossoms than female blossoms on a squash plant. There may be 3 to 4 male blossoms opening for several days to a week before the first female blossoms open.

You say its cold and rainy there, have you seen any bees around?

Thanks for that information Sharon. That sounds like a tough way to make a baby. I have seen my blossoms opened, but I haven't noticed what times. I guess since sunrise is 4:30am right now, "morning" is a bit earlier than most places.
The bees and wasps are loving my roses, so they are out and about, but not as many as previous years. My tomatoes are fruiting, so someone is pollinating something out there.
