Planting Trees in June

Hey everyone, nice to see so many people from Calgary giving advice, which leads to my questions.

My wife and I were going to plant a few trees in our small back yard, and were going to go with a Swedish or Columnar Aspen x3 for privacy, and one other "show" tree.

My questions:

1) When is it "too late" to buy trees from a nursery and put them in?

2) What is a good tree to stand alone in the middle of the yard and really grow beautifully? Maydays are all over the neighborhood, and something similar (but different) would be nice. AND we already have a Schubert in the front yard. Any suggestions?
