propagate fig

I bought an old farm house that has a huge old fig tree at the place. The previous owner came by this weekend and said the place used to belong to his grandparents and they started the fig tree there. He said it was a sixth generation tree and he was asking if he could get a couple trees from it to start at his place. Would it be best to try to air layer a couple for him or just get some cuttings and try to root them that way? I have air layered a couple from it in the past but I have never tried to just root a cutting yet.
