How Bout Those Figs!!!

Well, while everyone is waiting for their figs to ripen; I felt it was time to post a few pictures. I winterized most of these tree in my greenhouse except about 10. They all leafed out in March and I keep their temperature above 40 once Spring hit. Our Spring turned into a strong summer with temperatures above 80 most of the time. In the past 2 weeks it has been raining a lot and I've already lost some figs already due to spliting. So here are a few pictures of my trees. I hope you enjoy the show!

Below is a picture of my Black Madeira. SHe has 4 figs. When I got this tree last year it had one fig and 2 leaves. It is suffering from the virus but I keep it fertilized and I think it will pull through.

Here is a picture of my Marseilles VS Black that I got as a cutting from Herman2. (THANK YOU HERMAN2!!) I have several of these fig in the exact same size. They really grow prettier and faster in the ground.

This fig below is my new mystery fig. It died over Winter and Spring so I placed in on my compost pile and just look at what God did! It came back to life!

This one below is my Sal's Coreleone BC#31. I paid a hefty price for this fig last year from a member of this forum. It came in a sterofoam 16oz cup. Well, look at it today! I placed it in a superpot because I wanted deep and plenty of roots. I repotted it a few days ago because it out grew the 1.5 gallon pot and is looking better now. It will fruit next year and will probably be twice the size.

Dennis, you are creating Fig Heaven. I am suffering from zone envy here. But I still keep trying, and my little trees are coming back to life too, which pleases me greatly. I would really love it if they looked like yours. A few fresh figs are definitely on my Bucket List. At almost 73 years old I've got to get it right, wouldn't you agree?

Sheesh Dennis, I'd love to be at your place around August:D.

You must be an expert on potting figs, looks like you've tried all types. Which type of pot works best for figs?

Thank you Mary! I tried other fruits years ago but figs are my joy.

Thank you Martin! I hope to have plenty of figs this season. I don't have some of the unique ones like most but I am blessed with what I have. Cheers! Dennis

Sal, I truly love figs. My wife thinks I'm crazy because I am always reading the forums and other links about figs. I want to cover my pool next year and place more figs on my deck but the wife says no. So, I'm having to tend and care for others in pots and in the ground.

Girlbug2, I'm no potting fig expert but thanks for the compliment....I just learned from experience and advise from others on this forum. I do make my own soil mixture depending on the type of pot I use. I use 3 types, Superpots (1.5, 3 & 5 gallon size), normal 3 & 5 gallon plastic pots, and 20 and 30 gallon tubs. I have a fast draining soil mixture but I can not use it in my superpots. Here down South we have a bag of soil conditioner call Nature's Helper. It's also called clay buster. It's mostly pine bark fines about the size of a dime. I use this stuff with Lou's soil mixture. Lou's mix has sand but I substitue turface for the sand and it works great. And I don't have sheep's manure, I use horse manure or cow manure. I'm trying to get my friend who works for a local nursery to raise some rabbits and sell me the manure. So far he's thinking about it!

For my super pots, I just use half MG half BX Pro mix. MG hold more moisture and keeps me from watering every 3 days. The superpots allow more air to the roots so the 2 balance out well. I also keep an eye on my figs and test the soil with a pH tester and moisture meter. If small leaves start dropping or leaves start turning yellow, your tree is talking to you and you have to find out what's happening. like I said, I've learned from experience and like a doctor start giving the tree a check up. And keep your trees on a fertilizer schedule. Figs in my area start getting ripe around July and August. I have several MVS Black fig trees and look forward to making plenty of jam this year. :) Dennis
