If it makes you feel better Edge of Darkness looks nothing likes its picture even when its not mislabeled. My brother got one last year, its just fugly.

Oh. Well. Ok then I guess I do feel a little better if it was fugly. What was so bad about it? It looks nice on the tag.

But the one I got is fugly too. I've never been a fan of peach and with burgundy it's vile. With lime green in the middle it's just putrid. What was the hybridizer thinking? Wow, this doesn't match! Release this one! Label it Edge of Darkness and some schmuck in Winnipeg will buy it for $25!

Do I dare even say that I think it looks pretty? Maybe you have be there to really see the fugly.

Ah well maybe it's not that bad. Like I said Peach isn't my thing. Maybe it will grow on me - it's healthy as a horse anyway, as is anything that you don't really want in the garden. But there's something about the petals that's kinda THICK and puckery and gross. Ewww.

I have to say I think it's pretty, too. It would go nicely with the coral annuals that I search so hi and lo for every spring to go with periwinkle and soft yellow.

With blue or purple flowering plants, I find that the pictures on the tag, or in garden catalogues, aren't quite the same shade as the actual bloom anyways.

Then again, this is really taking the cake. Maybe you can name it Edge of Brightness.

Reminds me of my water lilies. I got tubers at walmart last year and one was supposedly red and one yellow. When they bloomed, I discovered they were both white. I don't mind so much, but I actually wasted time standing at walmart going through the different colours and contemplating what would look best.

Been there done that with purchased plants...last year it was roses at Canadian Tire..I bought a friend a Hansa rose..only it wasnt a hansa...went back..they had the last of the roses on a very reduced price..bought the last 2 hansas..only to find neither of them were hansas either...lol..what every they were they were too tender for our zone and none of them made it through the winter...lol...savona

Yeah I know what you mean Glen about purple tags with pink flowers. When the first bud started opening I was hoping that was the case but nope, it's Edge of Brightness. LOL.

I'm not that mad if I get wrong or dead things when I buy from Walmart and Cdn Tire. It's almost a nice surprise if plants are correct and healthy if I buy em really cheap. But this was THE reputable nursery around Winnipeg and it was pricey. I guess it's the fault of their stock supplier though.

I've gotten Iris and gladiolas (twice) the wrong color from Walmart. Every shrub (at least 4) I bought there has died. The annuals I've gotten there haven't done so great. I've had some better luck with perennials - got some really nice hosta for $2.50 each. I guess its kind of a crapshoot buying there - but you're right. You expect more from the better nurseries when you're paying premium bucks.

Those big box stores all vary from store to store depending on the Seasonal department management and staff. Well, not for mislabeling but for plant care. The Walmart nearest me actually takes reasonably good care of its plants but I have seen some nightmares. Our local Canadian Tire is awful.

And nurseries have no control over customers moving tags inadvertently.

Maybe you should complain - at least a phone call. Maybe Shelmerdine's got their supply from a grower who supplied them with the wrong plant, in other words, maybe Shelmerdine's got screwed, too.

For what it's worth, I don't think it's that ugly either. I think it would look pretty nice in front of a purple leaved shrub (Purple Leaved Sandcherry, or the purple Berberis)

Just like my very tall marigolds which were labelled yellow and they are orange. They look horrible with the red petunias planted in front of them

I started some red impatients from seed this year, and put them in a container. I have this beautiful bouquet of red impatients and one lone hot pink plant. Luckily the colors don't clash, but the pink one does look out of place

northspruce: Thanks very much for posting your information and pics to start this thread. Exactly the same thing happened to me! Twice! In fact, I found this forum because I was searching for answers to this mystery. I bought my second EofD from Patmore's in Brandon...it is a little nicer in colour than the Shelmerdine's...but still not the promised lavender. I wonder if this could this be because of the method used to propagate the plants? - P

People are telling me it doesn't live up to its description in terms of being fugly or not-too-purple, but mine was clearly mis-labeled. I'm sorry to hear yours isn't what you expected either. Mine is just a different cultivar. But I won't bother to find a real EoD after what I've heard now.

Call Shelmerdine and ask if they'll take the daylily back. Then dig it up and return it for a refund.

I did the same with the E of D daylily I bought from St. Mary's a couple of years ago.

Turns out the E of D's are all clones, which will not bloom true to their parent plant.

Warning: the same is true of pretty much any daylily sold at the big nurseries in Winnipeg. (Well, except for Stella D'oro, cuz that thing grows like a weed).

I'm a daylily collector and hybridizer, and I had to learn quickly that you only buy from nurseries that sell you root divisions of their daylilies, or else you end up with watered down flowers.

Shelmerdines has a website, why don't you email them with your complaint? Sure couldn't hurt. Who knows, they may send you a refund or a credit for another plant the next time you're in Winnipeg. Good luck.

I'm not driving back there because it's half and hour each way and I don't have time. Problem is, they're not even IN Winnipeg they are in Headingley and I never go there for any other reason.

To make matters worse (I wasn't going to admit this) at the same time I bought the daylily I also bought a hibiscus and an Astilbe that both dropped dead immediately of spider mites. I'm not complaining because there is no course of action that will make it better, given that a daylily is not worth driving an hour for. I hope this doesn't sound bitter, I'm just not that concerned beyond some minor annoyance.

I bought a EOD last year from Patrick's Studio, it still hasn't put out one bloom so that I can see what colour it's going to be, crossing fingers that it will be just like the picture on your tag. I'll let you know when it EVER blooms ;)

btw, the mistake daylily ain't so bad, I like it ;)

Susie: Thanks. Clones, eh. I was wondering if it was something like that. I am sure that the plants I bought were not mislabelled as they each had a label glued on the pot as well as the tag that northspruce posted. How can reputable nurseries take advantage of unsuspecting novice gardeners like me this way? If I had known there was a chance that my "flower colour may not be exactly (or even close to) as pictured", I would not have spent the $. - P

The big nurseries are there to sell the plants offered by the growers, and that includes all the tissue cultured cloned daylilies that are flooding the market. There are well over 300 cloned daylilies offered for sale in Canada.

I learned the hard way, too. But then I discovered I could buy REAL daylilies, field grown by the daylily breeders.

And thus started a huge run on my pocket book each year. I don't want to think about what I spend on daylilies and their seeds.

But some of them are sooooo nice!

I live in Brandon. Last year I also spent $25ish on "Edge of Darkness". The absolutely gorgeous picture of the daylily is what sold the daylily to me. I had the same color of flower that you came up with this spring. I had not planted mine yet and so it was easy for me to take it back to the Green Spot Nursery here in Brandon. They gave me a credit for the amount that I paid and mentioned then that the supplier had supplied them with the wrong daylily...not Edge of Darkness. Lots of others were also bringing theirs back. I find it interesting that your picture of E of D is the same that mine, LAST year, bloomed like. I like to KNOW that the daylily that I am getting IS the daylily that it is labelled as.

I am very interested to know that, V.R.Girl. I really thought that I got a mis-labeled daylily but this pretty much confirms there's bad tissue clones of this thing going around.

At the moment, you can't buy field-grown daylilies in Manitoba, at least not from a daylily breeder.

But if you check out Charlotte's Daylily Diary online, you can find lots of places that sell them.

Or contact Gary Carlson at gcarlson@interhop.net. He publishes a huge list of Canadian daylily dealers and what they are selling, available for $10 or a nice daylily cultivar.

I have bought from a number of these Canadian sources, although I tend to not place orders two years in a row, because I pick 'em clean the first year! Bwahahah. Spent too much $$ on daylilies again, thanks to Gary and his guide.

Gary's guide lists the plant, its characteristics, the breeder, the price and the nursery selling it. You can google the plant name, and hopefully come up with a photo of the flower.

I can skim through his yearly guides a bit faster, because I only like plants hybridized in the past 5 or 6 years, and I like UF (unusual forms). I also look for my favourite breeders, like John Peat and Curt Hanson.

Buying these plants is a guessing game. Some of them really enjoy living in Manitoba, while others want a warmer climate in order to bloom. Those end up getting traded to people who live elsewhere!
