Not sure about stools --- they were a gift (second not shown here). I believe they were from Cost Plus in the SF Bay area, but that was a while back (~8 years or so).

so how do you retrieve things from the top shelves over the island?

The less often we need something, the higher the shelf it sits on. I stand on a chair or stool for the top shelf -- for the once every year or so we need the what-ever-it-is. Of course the alternative would have been to leave off the top shelves and do without the display items, but then your eye wouldn't be drawn up to the 11-foot ceiling height so well.
