I've only had mine for one year now, it too had alot of top branch winterkill and sadly no blooms this year. It's called Forsythia suspensa Mimosa de Paris and I paid like $2 clearance for it ;)

I have a Northern Gold forsythia that I've had for over 10 years. It doesn't bloom much - "flowery ankles" on good years, most years about 10 flowers. But it is sitting out in the open, tangled up with an old honeysuckle and a rose that suckered into the middle of the clump, and it rarely has any winterkill. There used to be a farm shop there, and it was tucked against the east wall. I occasionally got flowers then. I wouldn't call it a pretty bush - its strongest good point is that it's green!

Too bad....I remember them as a child in Switzerland, the most beautiful "yellow bush", come spring.
I don't think have seen one in Edmonton this yellow yet.

The neighbor had one up against the west side of her house, only once had I seen the thing completely covered in bloom, it was awesome ... otherwise, just at the bottom as you say ... I think she hacked the big ole bush out.

I've seen lots of them around here with great full yellow blooms in spring--Don't have one as I don't think the shrub/bush/small tree is that appealing the rest of the year. Sell lots at the nursery

Forsythia "Northern Gold" is the only thing that can survive in the NW corner of my house. It blooms every year, and suckers like crazy. I cut it back after blooming every spring.
