Marcia, did it break right off? You can always try to root it. Dip it in some rooting hormone, stick it in the soil, water it every day and it might take.

I always wonder in such cases, if you were to, say, put a wood splint and tape (or something to that effect), would the branch eventually heal somewhat (or at least get it's strength back to hold up on it's own?)

The branch won't mend itself. I've tried. When the heat comes it will wilt away and die. It is better to take it off so it can use the energy to send up new shoots.

It wasn't completely off, just close. It's a big branch, one of the main ones. I could try rooting it, i guess, just to see if it would work.
