Dead or Damaged?

I went away for 9 days, leaving a neighbor kid to tend my place and water my plants.

It appears that he watered nothing until some of them appeared to be dying, and a couple are DEAD. My Violetta, of which I was so proud, has lost most of its leaves and is clearly very sick. The strawberry bed is dead, as are a couple of year old figs in pots.

Rats. On the other hand, I got to play with my yearling grand nieces and nephews; ate a ton of barbeque, shot a bit of skeet, saw many of the relatives and had a good time.

We take it as it comes; I will teach the kid to do better next time.

Ciao Ox, I am sorry to hear about your plants, they will probably come back soon, but they will be angry when they do. Are there any good terminal buds at the ends or anything green? When I went away, I made sure I called my neighbor to make sure she was taking care of everything, I even stayed on the phone as she walked through watering things. Maybe you can remind the kid through phonecalls to check up especially when you have prized or figs you are really proud of next time you leave or maybe you should find someone else a little more reliable. I think we need to keep on top of the kids, especially these days, they get sidetracked very easily with all these luxuries they have now. I had a small stroke the other day when my friend said she was getting her 8 year old daughter a cell phone, then when she got her the phone, her daughter said " take it back, I want a different one!!!!" I will send you good luck and hope for the best with your figs. Ciao

Ox, I have taught my son 7, daughter 4, to water trees. They are my last line of defense when i am on travel to bring home the bacon.

It is all about responsibility, and trust.

Sorry to hear about your trees. Please keep us informed.

..or maybe you can install a simple drip irrigation system on a timer so you don't have to worry?

Here is a link that might be useful: Drip Irrigation How To Guide

Keep moist, not soggy, shade if possible. You might be surprised. If they have dropped leaves, they will need less water because there will be less transpiration from the reduced leaf surface, so it will be easier to over water. Humid greenhouse might also help.

I've come to accept that visiting the family out of state means that I lose a plant a year to watering or similar issues. I have added drip irrigation last/this year and it has given me the ability to ensure the survival of particular plants, but given my numerous plant obsessions I have not built the system sufficiently enough yet to ensure survival of all (I have two areas under raised sprinklers set with the main drip system)
