pruning for winter

My orchard of 22 fig trees is looking to be very productive this year. I prepare them for winter by placing a fencing wire tube around them, four feet tall, and filling this with leaves. I only had one little tree die back, and it is going gangbusters at present. In preparation for next winter - since my wire tubes are limited to four feet, should I (could I) prune the main trunks down to three feet or so, in order to cover them completely with leaves? Many of my trees are seven to eight feet tall, will this pruning reduce my production, or will they put out enough growth next spring to produce a full crop? Or should I continue to let them grow and take a chance on a harsher winter? I live in the suburbs of Washington, DC, ag zone rated at 7 (but I contend it is more likely 6b).....Elder
