I've never done grafting, but have read a little bit about it. I believe the time to do this is during growth flushes like you will see this spring. You graph the branches from other varieties onto your existing tree, not the suckers. Citrus is usually grown on different root stock and the suckers from the root stock will produce sour fruits.

Be careful not to graft diseased branches onto your tree.

I may have to do this. I spent about $200 for a fruit cocktail tree from Lukas Nursery and it is half dead from the freeze. I'll have to wait a little longer to see if it will come back. Some of the branches are still green but the leaves have shriveled and died. sigh......

i found one for $150 at Hd that had 5 fruits (none were lemons--booo)

I found another at willow tree nursery that has 3 fruits for $200.

thats a good thought about diseased. i'd hate to kill my perfect navel orange tree..

I don't care for grapefruit, so I looked a long time for one that didn't have grapefruit. Mine wasn't suppose to have grapefruit, but it did anyway. grrrr

I have read that grapefruit are a more vigorous grower so you have to prune them a lot so they don't dominate the rest of the tree.

I also read about some guy in south florida, maybe a member of the rare fruit council, that has grafter something like 30-40 varieties on one tree. They ripen at different times, so he usually has something to pick.
