Other than hummers, most of my "visitors" are bugs!

We have hummers come to the feeders but I have yet to get a decent picture of one. The other day I did have quite the commotion going on when I went to my composter. Seems that Ma and Pa Robin didn't like me intruding!

Some of my visitors:

I never got a pic but I used to love the hummingbird (sphynx) moths that came to my nicotianas in the evening. They were SO cool, they looked exactly like hummers! 2 years ago the City went crazy spraying for mosquitoes against the West Nile Virus and I have never seen one since. Don't get me wrong, I am ALL in favour of mosquito spraying. It just seemed a little quiet that year, no bees or moths or skeeters... seems odd that the HB moth population has never returned.

I didn't get a picture but last night I had a fox in the garden. It came down the stairs and then walked past my wife and I and then paused to look at my cat and coutinued to the front yard and then to the park by the river.
Last year I went to chase a cat from the garbage only to realize it was a skunk. Boy was I lucky it didn't chase me.
It is amazing the wild life that lives in a city of 56,000 people.

Several years ago, I hung a decorative birdhouse in our Mountain Ash. It was empty for quite some time.

Two summers ago, the house was taken over by yellow jackets. Needless to say, I wasn't too happy. I steered clear of the tree until well after a hard frost, when I promptly cleaned out the paper nest.

Last year, the house was occupied by bumblebees. I was overjoyed. The bees never bothered anyone (my dog was stung, once, but she shouldn't have been "playing" with the bee--it's not a chew toy!), and it was great to actually witness a bee doing a "dance" in front of the hive.

I didn't empty out the house, because I was hoping more bumblebees would use it again, since birds didn't seem too interested. But, instead, I got a family of House Wrens. What lovely little birds, what wonderful singing voices, and what a privilege to have them in the yard.

My husband managed to take a couple of photos, but he found it hard to focus on the wren. Excuse the blurriness.

Here's a shot of the two white doves/pigeons that visit our yard on a daily basis (the large one has been coming since April, the smaller since early May)

Not really anything out of the ordinary here, but I just love these lil guys :)

OMG the craziest thing just happened to me! I couldn't take a pic because I was the subject of the visitor... I was outside staking a delphinium, and a yellow dragonfly landed on my upper arm, and I looked closely and it was munching on a big fly. I fought back panic and it stayed there chewing away for about 2 minutes then flew off. It was really cool but super gross too, it left some fly debris on my arm. UUGH! Apparently now I am a picnic table...

That is amazing, northspruce. Gross, but amazing. Don't you love it when nature acts as though you belong? Kudos are in order; most people would have swatted the dragonfly, meal and all. You showed just how much you respect the living things in your garden. (Although, it's too bad it wasn't a chickadee finishing off a sunflower seed, instead! Dragonflies are great, mind you, but chickadees are cuter.)

Oh yeah seriously we have so many mosquitoes in Manitoba this year, if the dragonflies wanted to use my microwave and dishes I would let them! LOL

I'm a major tomboy and stuff like that doesn't bother me usually but it was kinda GROSS having a fly eaten on me...

Yesterday morning was really foggy and when the sun did come out everything was gleaming. Even the spiderwebs look great when wet, but when they dry up, out comes the broom! Didn't get the engineer who built it in the picture, but I thought his/her work was pretty cool.

Ewwwwww northspruce!!! You certainly have some ummmm buggy moments!LOL
