martagon lily?

Here's a picture of the lily I received last year from a friend. Do you think it's a martagon?

Yes I think that's a Martagon. I love those lilies and have about 8 of them. They are hard to find and always too expensive.

Oh good - that means at least one of mine survived! There's some foliage like that coming up where i planted the martagons last fall.

I had heard that they could be temperamental about coming up so I was happy to see this one pop up the first year. It was a huge bulb, like a large apple. The foliage doesn't look too healthy to me, but I hope it's just having growing pains! The flowers are quite small, but cute.

They can be quite slow getting started but then they do really well. So don't give up if you don't see anything coming up. May not be till next year.

This looks just like the one a friend who moved away gave me last year. I was checking out some pics and think it might be dahlasonhi(probably butchered the spelling but close enough!) I was thrilled to see it bloom. I was a little worried that some of the bottom leaves were browning/rusty at the edges but hoped that it was just related to all the wet cool weather we had (and are still having, actually) I have another that I got at a lily sale last year, rosalinda is her name. She hasn't opened her buds yet; she is in a more shady spot than the other one. I just love these little lilies; I would like to get some more, but they sure are pricey!

Well thanks Debbie, it's so much easier to do a search when you have a name to work with. I'm pretty sure you're right. I found one and opened both pages side by side to compare. It is Dalhansonii. You were very close in spelling, lol. I was thrilled to see this one bloom also.

    Hi Marie,

Wow, looks great... I was thinking of ordering some Martagons from The Lily Nook for this fall...
They are supposed to do great in a shady area...which I have alot of... lol.
    Nice pics...

Great picture. I am just starting on the martagon lilies myself. I have two clumps of what I think are hansonii but am not totally sure. I got them from a backyard lily grower who refered to them simply as martagons. He dissolved his lily operation because on an increasingly obsessive fear of the lily beetle, so I got a very good price on them. I recently found a source for dahlhansonii bulbs at $5 each....unprecedented!!!!! and on the internet too Yahooo!!!!newine

    Hi Rob,
Good to hear from you again. I've only recently become interested in martagons. I wasn't expecting this one, and wasn't prepared so probably planted it in the wrong place. I hear they don't like to be disturbed once planted. I'll have to plan better before I get another one. How much shade do you think they can take?

Maria--I have martagon backhouse that I planted last fall. It gets about 50% shade and is doing fine.

Hi Carolyn. I just love your martagon! Mrs. R.O. Backhouse? She is one on my must have list. I read an interesting article on her namesake recently in The Prairie Garden. Thanks for posting her pic.
