Burst figs?

I'm new to gardening (as you can probably guess from my user name). One of the cornucopia of trees and other garden goodies in my new backyard is a fig tree (specific species unknown). I've had a few figs (brebas, I guess?) look as if they're starting to ripen, and then a day later when I check on them, they're burst. What causes this? Should I be picking them earlier? The fruit inside did not look particularly ripe, but I have to admit I know next to nothing about figs.

Thanks!
