I'm sure a number of people in the Fig Forum would like to offer this piece of advice, but most are too polite to do so - therefore I will do it for them: my advice is - don't trust your brother-in-law!
As for your fig tree, there is no magic potion to return it to its former condition. Continue to care for it, being sure not to overwater. A little shade might be advisable.....Elder

The goal right now is to return it to health. That means good watering, and after a week or two, a little fertilizer (miracle gro at 1/2 strength, applied a hour or two after a good saoking). Forget figs this year, and concentrate on getting it healthy for next year.

Invest in a timer and automatic water valve for watering figs . Go on vacation and don't worry about watering. This year will be a bust for your tree but it will survive. Fig tree roots are tough. a 4 zone time, solenoid valve and some 3/4" pvc pipe and fittings will set you back about $40 or $50 bucks. Don't use a spray. Run pipe directly into each pot with water restricters. A small price to pay for controlled watering and not having to look at a half dead tree that was your pride and joy. (Damn those brother-in -laws!!!!)

Well I'm happy to report that my Kalamata is starting to put out new leaves! I think some of the figs might make it too. These plants are tough!
