I saw a few photos you posted on the Upstate NY forum- lovely. Love these too. Did you make that pyramid trellis in the second photo? It's wonderful. Love all of these pictures. Your hard work has really paid off.

Very pretty garden and so nice to see your comfy front porch. I'll take a lemonade and you can find me in that white rocker, quilting and humming a tune from 1962. ; - )

Just beautiful! I'd love to have a glass of wine with you on your front porch!

    Take care.

Beautiful garden. What is the really tall plant (w/no flowers) in the 3rd picture to the right of the white jug? I have the same plant. I got it from my grandfather's yard. He passed away in April and he never told me the name. He said they were from Spain and had yellow flowers but I don't know how true that is. It is the 1st year in my garden. I would really love to know what it is. Thanks!

Well I agree with everyone else, I love it! Your porch is so inviting. And what a great view you would have and the pond is a big plus. You have truly worked hard and all those rocks, wow. I have a field by me and I've been rock hunting. Thanks for sharing.

l would like to join in, and say how cottagey your plants look together in the border, is that a milk churn you have there, l would love one of those. Can you tell me, are the rocks just placed, because here we have cemented them in,to stop any weeds, how do you get on with that, and from the photo's l see on this forum, bark mulch, seems to be used more than it is here.Just wanted to say l thought your garden was great.

you should be very proud of yourself.
this is the essence of cottage garden!

I LOVE your little pond! What a great job. The entire garden is just beautiful!

I could sit and rock on that porch all day. Beautiful!

You have a lovely cottage! Your garden almost has a woodsie feel to it. Like something from a fairy tale.

It looks perfect just the way you have it. Good job. Love it!

Big, welcoming porch, a tin roof and a beautiful garden view. Looks like heaven to me!

WOW, that is gorgeous. I too am using little boulders to edge some of my beds and I have a grass path. Do you use a strip of landscape edging in front of the rocks to keep the grass out? Or do you use a weedwhip to get close enough to cut the grass around the rocks? I was peering closely at your pictures but I just can't tell! All I can see is that your grass looks very neat all the way up to your rocks? Is there mulch there?

Oh how well we would get along decorations and plants my two favorite hobbies !

Ul, what a charming cottage and cottage garden. I am so glad you have a porch to rest on where you can admire the beautiful and fun space you've completed.

Thank you all so much for your compliments. To answer some of the questions, the house is 1845 but I have running water and electricity now LOL. the tall flowers are some old fashion floer, i don't know the name but they will bloom yellow. Also I have a lot of impatiens glandulafera, they are now seeded by the 1000s and I pulled them by the wheelbarrow. I make all the structures myself, I use birch from the woods in back and wire. The fence was made with a metal structure as a base for strenght and then disguised, I saw that in a Readers digest book and kind of copied it,
the rocks I took from my stonewalls that are all over this property. I am not so sure if that was such a good idea, I had brick first but that was harder to come by then rock. The weeding is terrible, I weedwack but can't get ridd of creeping charlie, I would like the edging to look cleaner.
also I am not to happy about the red mulch, but I have so much money in it that I hate to change the color, hopefully it will all fill in with flowers.
I dont like the look of the white rocker so I bought green paint and when i have some time i will do it.
I mowed my lawn tonight and I push so I am pretty beat. In the morning I will weedwack,I am woman, I can do it :-) even bought cool safety glasses, because you really need those. I will try to post more picks soon, with a view of the porch as requested
thanks again, that makes me want to work harder that people enjoy my pics :-)

O-o-o-o-o-ooo! lovely! What an incredible amount of work and love that shows.
I see you've had a Creeping Cat pop up, those can be invasive, you might want to pull it before it goes to seed. It's right by the sunflower in the first picture.
Gosh, I'd love to lie on that couch on the porch and read a book all afternoon... of course I'd have dinner in the crockpot and the phone unplugged so I'd have no worries to disturb me. You pond is at a great spot to both watch and listen to from the porch.

I don't have to tell you your house is A Treasure... pure bliss. Old houses are a lot of work, of course, but it is worth it to discover bits of their history and the changes they have enjoyed and/or suffered through the years. I just located the SON of the builder of my house I bought last August!!! His Dad built it and he and his siblings grew up here and all live nearby. It is only a 1940 house... but it has charm and I am anxiously awaiting his first visit so I can pump him for details! Hee! I told him I had save sections of the five layers of wallpaper we took down from the portion of the living room that was one of the bedrooms when he was a kid. He said his folks knocked out the wall to enlarge the living room after the last kid was gone. I told him I'd also foung and was saving a darling old leather baby shoe I'd found in a recess! He seemed surprised (and a bit uncomfortable) I quickly added if he didn't want it maybe his sister would.

Please tell us what all ornaments you're going to make for the gardens at your home. I adore the teuter you've made, I have been planning to make one, just have to find the time!
Your rock edging is classic, I have been saving a pile of rocks and put a short edging of all the prettiest big ones along my smallest bed.

Thank you for your compliments, I actually went and looked for that weed LOL the straying cat. I bought 17 more plants and 3 lilacs, I was going to start a new bed but I think I will just cram those plants in other beds because I have so much weeding to do and upkeep that that can wait til next spring, unless I find the guy that tills new beds for me everyyear, I forgot his last name so I will have to stop by at his house. I make all the structures with birch and wire. it goes pretty quick.

Ulli, how is your garden going this year? Love to see what changes a year has made!

(and wondering if the Creeping Cat went and reseeded...!)

I pulled this old post up because I FINALLY went and made a teuter out in my garage last night, I have in mind to make a passel of 'em and sell along with plants at my yard sale this summer.

Yes Ullis, we need a picture fix! Absolutely gorgeous!

oh wow - sure glad this was brought back up - since I am still fairly new to the cottage garden forum there are so many gardens that I haven't seen yet. That is just the most delightful setting and would love to see this years pictures too.....

I agree, your garden is very welcoming. Please keep showing us pictures throughout the season! I bet it looks great all throughout summer, too.

Ullis - I remember your gardens from last year. They are gorgeous. And your porch, well one can always dream. Please, may we have updated pics?

Ditto to what everyone else has said. I love your garden and house. I wish I had an old house to play with but am having fun trying to make mine look old.
In the third pic. what is the silver plant? i have some but can't name it.

What a pretty garden you have....you've done a wonderful job! I can relate, as we've been renovating the back yard at our home, which has been pretty much neglected for years and years. I love your edging stones....I've been searching around here in SoCal for rocks like that that don't cost an arm and a leg. So far, no luck. We might have to take the truck and go rock hunting ourselves.

Bravo! I like the combinations you chose. It's nice to finally have an area done, isn't it?

I worked on my front yard this Spring/Summer too. The whole thing needed an overhaul. Though mine is only in it's first season I'm anxious to see what three years will give me.

I had thought about adding a small fountain to my front yard. Now that I've seen yours, I wish I had stayed with that plan. There really isn't room now. Instead, I went with a birdbath made from a wrought iron plant stand and a terra cotta platter. I am definately adding a pond to the back yard next Spring!

Congrats on a job well done!

Ulli - you have created just a perfect space for your home. I love it!!! And I just love to pop by and share a chilled bottle of Chardonnay with you!! ;-))

It turned out gorgeous. I remember the photos from when you started! Your garden integrates your home so nicely into the landscape! Great job!

I've just been through 25 pages (yes, 25, its pouring outside) of the Plant ID forum and looked at hundreds of pictures, and still cannot ID a plant. It is in Ullis' 3rd picture, to the right of the white milk can. Tallest plants there. I have some in my front garden and they are up past the eave!!!

Can anyone help with a name for these?

    Carol

Wantoretire---did guess what? I have the self same plant that I got in a plant trade this year that is just starting to bloom with a yellow flower and I have no idea what it is either!!! So if you find out what it is or I find out I'll let you know. I was so hoping someone was going to chime in with the answer!!! Uli's garden is just gorgeous! I hope she sees that we are all loving it again this year!

Hi Ghoghunter - I went on a garden tour last weekend and that plant was in one of the gorgeous gardens, so I knew it isn't a weed, even tho DH insists that it is (he who knows virtually NOTHING about gardening at all). There are just the smallest of buds right now. I finally called the woman who belongs to the garden and she just said that she thinks it is in the sunflower family and that it spreads. That's what got me started on Google images then the ID forum.

Hi Wantoretire did --- or Carol I looked in my Bluestone perennial catalog p. 39 and I think it is a perennial sunflower called a Helianthus. A single blooming one is the type I have I think. There is also a double blooming one. Here is a picture of the double blooming one from their online catalog. You can see the foliage a little better in this picture but there is also a single flowering one there too. Take a look and see what you think. I'm prety sure that's what we have.

Here is a link that might be useful: Double Helianthus

Ghoghunter - Mine is not dense at all. Just 3 very separate stalks. Sorry, I can't take a pic, but in Ullis' 3rd pic, its clear. Above the rudbeckia, to the right of the milk can. Mine's the same thing.

    Ulli,
Wow, your garden is fantastic, and what a beautiful house and porch you have! It will be lovely to see how it grows. You've really done a lovely job.

Good morning Ghoghunter - The mystery plant is in full bloom now. The flowers are maybe 4 or 5 inches across, yellow coneflower shape right now (early AM) with a dark center. When it gets warmer and brighter they flatten out. I'm going to put them somewhere they can spread....

Wantoretire--did I had another brilliant thought. I think your mystery plant might be a cup plant. A silphium perfoliatum. See if that's what it is. I included a link. The opposite leaves just kind of made me think of it and the bright yellow blooms tool

Here is a link that might be useful: Cup plant

Ghoghunter - Nope, that's not it either !! The petals look pulled back in the early AM, like a coneflower. Leaves are far apart on the tall stalks. I'll try to fire up my digicam and get a picture.

It does look absolutely beautiful. But one quick question, UllisGarden: Are you really done. I mean, is it ever really done. Next spring, will you be able to just look out at in without tweeking a thing??? ;)

    Maybe this?

I finally have a name - its Rudbeckia laciniata. I'm going to move the babies to an open area where they can spread. Thanks everyone for trying.

I sent an email to Ulli, since her/his email addy is listed here, to let her/him know that this thread had come back to the top and that many people had questions and comments. I received no reply. Just FYI.
