Celeste Fig Pics

My Celeste dropped all but one fig this year. I thought it was gonna drop like the others, but this one is trying to make it to the end. Now the tree will stay outside for the first time here in northern NJ, so I'll see if I will get better results next year.

Yes It is a Celeste looking at it.
I allready hate it if droped so many main crop figs.I am sure you was taking good care of it.
May i ask :Where did you buy it from?.
I want to know ,because i am sure that there is a strain of Celeste out there that does not drop fruits like that.
If anyone out there has a Celeste that does not drop half of its fruits before ripe please Speak up!!!Peace

I purchased it from Paradise Nursery 3 years ago.
Now that you mention, I realize that tree has consistently dropped more figs than it has ripened.

Also, it was only 3pm when I took the pictures. You can see how the tree is already out of the sun at that point.
Not sure if fruit drops due to lack of sun? I also think it was from winter storage.
I had it in a sunny room where it was getting hot and cold while breaking dormancy. Thanks!!!

I have several Celestes which are young and don't have enough history. I have one suspected Celeste which drops a lot of figs, but I have Celeste (JN) and Celestial (DW) which do not drop any figs at all, and never have. Should be available at http://encantofarms.com this Fall.

Hate to say it but I don't think the fig in this photo is going to ripen either. One side looks brown and the other side looks green. Keep us posted.

The Celeste I have from Paradise dropped only 2 of its breba's, got over 2 dozen ripe ones off of it and this is just the second year I have had it. Lost a few to birds but not much. Fruit were small but nicely sweet. Unfortunatly it doesn't look like it is making a main crop ( or maybe the early one was its main crop?).
It gets full sun from around 9 AM till 8 PM and is over wintered in the darkest part of the basement (coolest too).

    Woody,
If you got a Celeste that produced breba, then it is NOT a
    Celeste! True Celeste figs are of the 1 (main) crop kind;
    or am I missing something...

    George,
I think what is meant when Condit or Eisen describe a fig like Celeste as having one crop, is that it reliably only produces one crop (usually the Fall crop). However it may produce brebas that all usually fall off without ripening (like my Celeste this year). Goodground's picture is of a breba, so it's not surprising that most if not all fell off. The Fall crop figs haven't started swelling yet on the pictured fig -- maybe it needs more sun exposure?

Good Point Gene:That fig is Breba!!!!.Maybe it had only breba all of them that fell!!!!.
In that case you should have removed them as soon as they appeared,to force the main crop to grow!!!!.
This is a mistake we make here on the east Coast.
If the tree makes a lot of breba,it will not grow the main crop soon enough to ripe.If the breba later fell we are left we no figs at all, because the breba figs kept the main crop from developing,so even if it makes it later it will not get ripe, before cold weather set in.

So we have to choose, what do we want, breba fig,or main crop fig,but we can't have it both way.Peace

    Hi Herman,
I DO appropriate your fig expertise.
However, I am not sure what you mean by your recent
endings, somewhat sounding as 'make peace not war'.
Certainly, I do detect peace (and not war within
this Fig Forum). I have never been to a real war
(thank God), but do have have some horror stores
from my parents about the WW II era.

Sometimes nations HAVE to go to war to preserve themselves.

Not sure what your goal is; if politcal, express it
    somewhere else...

Let us all support our BRAVE AMERICAN HEROS (you DARE go
here) that are being constantly SHOT at from nowhere...

    George (NJ).
P.S. Comments are welcome, but no further response from me..

Well since it doesn't appear to have any new ones forming on the Celeste, that must of been its one crop, since they came on it very early I just assumed it was forming a breba crop. They started showing shortly after I moved it onto the sun porch in February, it had broke its dormancy sooner than I expecteded while still in the basement. Had a period of time this early summer though when it seemed to completely stop all growth, it dropped some of the larger leaves, was like that for almost a month, then started up again.
I Picked the last fig off of it last night, the ones it formed last year weren't ripe as early in the season as this years. Breba or not they are still great! The ones from my Italian Honey are are sweet and just as addictive as the Celeste, I hope all the new ones I got this year from Paradise turn out to be as good!

    Gene,

I think you hit the nail on the head. I have been doing this since I have the tree. LOL, one time it startd with 17 and I ate 4. I will bury it to protect it and if it survives the winter, I will pick the breba crop myself so the tree will have enough time to put out some main figs. I noticed that the figs always start growing before and with the foliage. Thanks guys!!!

Oh yeah, when is the best time to prune the tree for best main crop next season? Thanks

    peace in the middle east

Goodground,Best Time to Prune is in the Spring(April),But if the fig is too large in fall ,i shorten the tree to a smaller size so i can cover (winterize it).
Then again in the Spring i prune it to final shape and size, usually less than 3 feet high.
    God Help us All!!!

Here's another Celeste Tree from southern California. I'm having good luck with it so far. Check the photos in the link below.

Herman -- useful point raise about breba & main crop in short season regions. Tried the pinching method & it works. Thanks for sharing knowledge found.

    Leon,
I'm sorry to say, but you were right. I went to touch it and it easily came off. It was not going ripen even if I didn't touch it. Thanks for the unpleasant diagnosis. I ate half of it and I got the fig flavor but only very little. Can't wait until next year!!!

My Celeste was loaded with brebas this spring. It had never produced a single breba before, just a main crop. Don't know if any would have ripened, as the Easter freeze killed it to the ground. It now has three new trunks that are 5 feet tall, but no figs.

Now the tree is starting to grow figs again (probably main crop now). I'm assuming that I don't have enough time to let them get ripe here in NJ, so do I need to remove the young figs? Or can I just let them grow until the cold weather? Thanks

    BUMP!!!

Is it ok to leave the figs on the tree for the rest of the summer? Thanks
