Goldenrods (Solidago), Predatory Wasps and Drought

One of the pleasant surprises in my garden has been a cultivar of goldenrod or Solidago ('Crown of rays'?).

Not only is this hardy perennial very drought resistent but it's also as palatable to munching bugs as broccoli is to little children. It has a long season of bloom from late July to September to decorate its regular but healthy and sturdy foliage. Native or natural plantings suite it well and it's flowers can provide countless pleasing combinations.

Adding to its allure it attracts clouds of predatory wasps. Organic gardening dictates the necessity of insect predators and the larvae of these tiny wasps are voracious insectivores. I love the sense of activity and life the vast quantity of these wasps give to this corner of my garden.

What species and cultivars has everyone grown in their garden? Does everyone else have such glowing remarks?

Oh by the way...you must grow goldenrod...you must grow goldenrod. I wasn't born evil it's just something I've grown into.

I love 'em too! The garden varieties are not invasive, contrary to popular belief...and I guess I should mention that they don't cause hayfever either (also contrary to popular belief). I have Solidago 'Goldkind'; 'Crown of Rays'; 'Laurin' (a very late bloomer, sometimes too late); something puzzlingly labelled as 'Hybr. Super' (very tall); a native species Solidago decumbens, which is an early bloomer (and it should be noted that the native species can be invasive in the garden); and a Solidaster (Solidago x Aster). Great plants.

I'm still on the lookout for a Solidago rugosa 'Fireworks' - has anyone managed to acquire one?

The only Solidago I have is 'Laurin'. Wouldn'cha know I'd buy that late, late bloomer? However, this year it is in full bloom right now. Usually, it waits until mid-September, about a week before hard frosts start.

I had a chance to buy 'Fireworks' this spring and passed it by. Wish I had not done that! Problem was it is a very large plant and I could not think of any place I could stuff it.
