Fig tree source

I saw the name Almost Eden on the board the other day and looked it up. It is a nursery located in southwest La. The post I saw it in, talked about how it only was 7.99 for a tree and if it was the wrong one no big loss. Well I found 3 trees that I wanted and sent them a message. I wanted to know if I could pick them up in person since I was going to be near there on the week end. They only do internet sales. I call them to make sure they had the ones I wanted. Mr John told me he had been in the nursery business for 30 years and that the trees he sells are cutting taken from his own orchid. He a great fellow, by the way, I only wished he would have let me visit him in person. We talked for about 30 minutes on the phone. His trees and nursery are USDA inspected and he has a seal of approval and notice that he ship with the trees. The trees I got are beautiful, at least 2 of the 3, the third has only 1 leaf and a bud, but I feel confident. His shipping is equal to none. He charges $6 to ship plus $2 a tree. So total shipping for the three was $12 and total cost was 35.82. You can't beat that anywhere. I don't know the guy but sure wish I did. He's a straight shooter. The 3rd tree I bought is a Conadria, the two other are pictured below after up-potting. I will wait until October to plant them in the ground.

Here is the Strawberry fig tree.

    Gene,

I just ordered: LSU Gold, Osborne Prolific, & and a Marylane Seedless. I will provide feedback when I receive the plants. Thanks for sharing.

I just googled them and I wish them nothing but the best if they are friendly and inexpensive. However they have to have the hardest web site to navigate of any on-line nursery or on-line retailer for that matter that I have ever seen.

    Hi genecolin,

Did you see any signs of RKN on the roots when you re-potted the plants?

    Thanks
    Cecil

Cecil, the roots were clean and plentiful. They don't get any better than those I got.

thisisme, I agree that their site is a little awkward to navigate, but I've seen worst. It's really simple after you toy with it a while. Well worth it after seeing the trees.

Well my experience with Almost Eden was not a good as Gene's. I received 3 whips with 2 in poor shape and one which is very leggy. See the quarter at the base of the center plant (Osborne Prolific) for scale.

    The Good.
    1 Nice folks
    2 No sign of RKN

    Not so good
1 Four inch pots with two out of three plants poorly rooted
2 Poor condition of plants (1 plant with 1 leaf, and another with 2 leaves) both of which show signs of stress.
3 Poorly done web page. I let the owner know that when the customer attempts to submit an order they are requested to input their personal information on an http url and not an https url. This is generally a bad ideal given the fact that Identity Theft is a growing problem. Please look at the link below that does a better job of addressing the http and https issue. Short story I would not place an on-line order with Almost Eden until they fix this issue.

As for the fig plants time will only tell if the plants are authentic. I give Almost Eden a C minus and will not be a return customer.

In my opinion, if you don't get your figs from a credible source that contributes on this forum, the best nursery for the money is Petals from the Past. I have ordered every fig tree Petals from the Past has and I have never been disappointed.

I do appreciate the sharing of information about fig sources and with any luck I can bring these plants along and they will be the real deal. So Gene you have my sincere thanks!
