Dutchman's Pipe was a huge favorite in the Victorian era when porches were built on so many houses. It makes a terrific green screen for shade and privacy and you can see it in many photos of houses from that era.

I have never grown it but had one friend who did. It formed a privacy "wall" on one end of her back porch. She was a neatnik and kept it in bounds. If you are like that, it may be a good plant for screening purposes. If you go away for weeks at a time or are very busy with work and family...not so much.

I have one which has been around for 7 years and for me it is a slow grower. I guess I can blame it's slow growth from being cut back severely and transplanted. Its a system I would advocate for those wanting to grow aggressive vine. Prune hard and you won't have trouble. Forget the flowers which are miniscule. I've not seen mine flower in all these years. I like the heart shaped leaves more.

OK here is the pic of it in the ground and ready to go! It was about 4' when I got it so hopefully it takes off. I will have to trim it a lot but I don't mind, I'm always outside gardening. As long as a vine doesn't have suckers like climbing hydrangeas and english ivy, i can handle it.

Looks nice! The leaves will get much bigger as it settles in the next year or so.
