Fig Wine

Hi! I just joined the list today and want to thank the members here for the information I found in previous posts on fig trees. I've learned how to air-layer suckers which I plan to do this weekend.

I've already dug up 17 rooted suckers and have potted them. I removed all the leaves and have been watering them twice a day to help prevent shock. They are between 1 foot and 4 feet tall. All had some rootstock but most have gone into shock, especially the larger ones. The tips are shriveing up. I think they will be OK but if not, IÂm trying the air-layer technique.

This is one of the most magnificent trees IÂve ever seen and I grew up with figs. ItÂs probably 25 years old if not more. It has to be 20Â tall and wide. ItÂs huge! I donÂt know the variety but it is a black fig. IÂm thinking itÂs a Black Mission Fig. Is there a good fig tree identification site (in English?) you can recommend?

I also found the now defunct Paradise Nursery. On their site is a list of fig recipes. One, Fig Wine, intrigues me. Has anyone made fig wine? Is it worth the effort? It says the wine is more of a rose than a red so IÂm thinking itÂs a bit sweet?

IÂm in Ramona, CA near San Diego. If there are local members, IÂd be interested in trading plants/varieties.

Nice to "meet" all of you,

Thanks!

Sue
