Yes. It can be invasive, but I've never seen it do so.

The only soapwort i know is the low-growing pink kind that i can never grow. There used to be a picture of it on McFayden's catalogue, spilling over a wall. I WANT THAT! Of course it won't grow for me. >:(

Thanks! I want it to spread as much as possible, because I have a hairbrained idea that I'd like to try making laundry soap out of it. I think I'd need a lot.

LOL Marcia I know EXACTLY the picture you mean! I ordered some from McFaydens a long time ago and it arrived dead. Since then I've grown it successfully from seed twice, but once I moved away just as it got going, and the second time it didn't have enough sun and fizzled out.

The one I have growing now is a tall white relative.

I've tried it from seed twice and even had a little bit for a few years, but it never ever looked like that picture! I tried again this year - ordered from McFayden, and none of it grew. There are certain things i'm doomed never to have! ~sniffle~

Both the pink flowering variety and the white are saponaria officianalis and both have the ingredient in the leaves that makes it lather up. The tall varieties, either pink or white, grows mainly in ditches and reseeds very well. I've seen it more abundant in wetter areas. Marcia, I bought seeds for the low groundcover pink one at Richters years ago and it does look like the pictures in some of the catalogues. That one did spread for me but not invasively. I grew it beside Mammoth Sage and it looked great beside the silver green sage. Marg

I wintersowed some years ago, very easy to start from seed, however, eventually even in full sun it fizzled out.
