The best is to graft a scion to your tree, scion cut dormant in March or April, then stored in a plastic bag moist, [with paper towel] in fridge until grafting time, usually in May when butts are leafing out, or you can give the scion to me and I make you a little tree for the following year, I would graft to a Siberian hardy root stock.

Somewhere in these forums or on another site, a person had rooted tip cuttings of Dolgo in willow water. See the link below for a good way to make it. If your tree is a Dolgo, they are easily purchased at a nursery. The offer from Konrad is a good one to take up as this way you are assured of having the same tree!

What is a scion? I am totally ignorant of these terms, sorry. A total tree novice here.
I am attached to that particular tree, so I would rather have an offspring of it than a totally new tree from a nursery.
Another question. The house I am considering is almost perfect EXCEPT that it is west facing. Yuck. Right now I have a south facing house so my north backyard is a sun trap. The new house is amongst very big trees and the backyard is east facing. Would a crapapple be able to live in those shady conditions?
