wait to the spring just before new growth starts and cut back to about half its current size. If it does not produce a breba crop you will not be loosing anything. Just know that multiple ranches will sprout from where you trim the tree. If desired, choose to remove some of these and shape the tree. An alternative method would be to cut it to the ground and let new growth come up each season. I would wait until the tree is more established for the latter method.

Thank you all for info....I will be happy to send trimmings for postage but would they survive? Please email me directly. Also I don't know what kind it is but I do know it is not white. A friend gave it to last summer and he has had figs from his tree (Harrisburg PA area).
