Fig Varieties From Madeira Island

Ok so after along time of searching for names with no luck I finally hit the Jackpot. Found the Elucidário Madeirense wich basically has records for the island from the 1500's and in there they wrote about the Fig trees grown on the Island.

This is what was writen

The Best white figs found on the Island were - Figo Rei, Moscatel, & Cotio , Bebera Branca

Best Green Figs were - Figo Doce, Figo Genovês,Martinho.

Best Brow Figs were- Burro

Best Black Figs were- Bebera Preta has Elongated Shape, Figo Preto AKA Black Madeira and he wrote that the best tasting Figos Pretos were found in the region of Ponta Delgada, Porto Moniz, Seixal & Porto Santo Island.

The most common tree cultivated in the 200-400m altitude.

He also wrote that there are Different Varieties of the same Generic name or names that are misleading for example ( " Doce ", " Do Algarve ", " Branco " )

Now the hard part is putting Pictures with those names.

Here is a map of the Island and as you can see the area's where they wrote that the best black figs were found were all on the North Coast of the Island. Coolest Winter temp is usually 10+ Celcius on the North Coast.

If anyone wants to give it a try in portuguese here is the link
