I was given a cutting from a 'red fig' which put out the same two sorts of leaves. Sadly, it did not survive. But somebody in the forum must know why this odd variation is leaves happens and what it means.

the ones on top are true leaves the ones on the bottom are almost like the 2 leaves that first pop out of a seed. it's normal so don't worry about it. is this your first fig tree? what a great plant to start with if so. if you ever want to trade cuttings let me know and I'll be happy to send you some.

Terminal buds and axillary buds grow different leaves, your axillary bud will grow into a terminal bud eventually. It works this way because axillary buds are usually protected from wind and shaded by leaves from terminal buds, they start inside the canopy behind or below the terminal buds on a mature tree. Terminal bud leaves are fully exposed and therefore more likely to take wind damage; when they are unlobed they flap, tear, and dry the tree out. Lobed leaves block less sunlight from reaching the interior of the tree and are more efficient at using water because of their reduced surface area.
